SDSU Police Launches New 911 System

San Diego State University constantly strives to serve and meet the growing needs of our community, especially the ability to receive emergency services quickly and efficiently. In today's culture, the telephone number 9-1-1 is an integral part of receiving those services. In order to serve our community in the best way possible, the San Diego State University Police Department launched a new telephone system on August 11, 2010 which will include answering public 9-1-1 telephone calls made from campus property within a one-mile radius of campus--including all fraternities and sororities, private residences owned by the University, and Alvarado Medical Center.

This new telephone system will complement existing emergency services by providing the SDSU Police Communications Center with a detailed location when a person calls 9-1-1 from any landline telephone. This information will be extremely beneficial if a person is having an emergency and is unable to speak or give location information for any reason.

For a period of time, 9-1-1 calls from cellular telephones will continue to be answered by surrounding police agencies and routed to the SDSU Police Department if the emergency is occurring on the University campus. The second phase of answering cellular 9-1-1 calls from within the campus borders will be added within a few months.

The SDSU Police Department phone number of 619-594-1991 will continue to be available for non-emergencies.

Any person with an emergency, whether medical or criminal, should always call 9-1-1. It is the most reliable and efficient way to receive emergency services in the state of California.

If you have any futher questions about SDSU Police emergency communications services, please e-mail the lead dispatcher, Shawndalyn Duncan.
